Abstract
Author using nineteenth century science fiction as an example tries to convince that the genre studies after cultural turn could be very effective for Literary History. Firstly he analyzes two traditional branches of genre theory: the structural and cognitive one. As he shows both turns out problematic due to their assumptions and their erroneous practice research. The cultural genre-theory overcomes all this obstacles. Researchers repeat after Bachtin that a genre is a kind of an utterance about fears and needs of the society. Thanks to its constructivism and appreciation of the historical context the cultural genre-theory go beyond the hegemonic and authoritative discourse of the traditional genology and provides the tools needed to understand „the positive state of mind”.
